CHURCH

Pastoral Residency

First Church offers a unique setting for learning about public ministry in an urban setting, and discovering how a church can serve as a platform for organizing and social change.

Pastoral Residents choose to focus on one or more of the following areas: arts chaplaincy, food system organizing, or liturgical arts. Each Resident’s job description is unique, crafted in consultation with the Senior Pastor.

Residencies are paid and may be year-long or summer term.

JY Lee

Pastoral Resident Summer 2021

  • Religious Background: PC(USA)

Princeton Theological Seminary (PhD Candidate, Society & Religion)

    Harvard Divinity School (M.Div Graduate)

  • “I did not have the clarity for a ministerial call when I began at First Pres. Pastor Black and the congregation enveloped me with love and prayer, and empowered and trusted me to experiment and learn. I attended most church meetings, preached several times, helped lead the young adult group, and participated in the Bible study and the Prayer meetings. I also attended Presbytery meetings and other clergy gatherings in Chicago, and was involved with forming partnerships with other organizations in Southside. I felt the church was at the vanguard of arts and activism in the community, and I had ample opportunities to work with artists and activists.”

Alexx Temeña

Liturgical Artist-in-Residence, Summer 2022

  • Religious Background: Buddhist, non-specific Christian

    Education: Chicago Theological Seminary (M.Div) & Self-Directed

  • “Before my internship at First, I couldn’t imagine how my gifts as an artist and learning designer might intersect with ministry. I saw no clear path for me to contribute meaningfully to ministry in a way that could honor both my creative ambitions and my religious and spiritual multiplicity. Pastor Black helped me identify how my interest in designing ceremony and my growing curiosity in sabbath and rest could serve the church through liturgical design. Rooted in my desire for more embodied, contemplative, and nature-rooted ritual experiences at church, we collaborated on designing a somatic ritual of receiving God’s grace. First is nurturing a culture of expansive creativity and heart- and community-centered innovation. I wouldn’t have explored liturgy as a creative practice if it weren’t for the church’s openness to experimental forms of ministry.

My internship experience was one of the most intentional, personalized, and formative vocational experiences I’d had in my adult life.”

Maedbh Orlowski-Scherer

Pastoral Resident AY 2022-2023

  • Religious Background: Roman Catholic

    Education: Chicago Theological Seminary (M.Div)

  • “When I think of First Church, the word that comes to mind for me over and over is community. We live in such a fragmented and alienated world where it is difficult to encounter any another person face-to-face, let alone people from different backgrounds and life experiences. At First Church, this condition of isolation is upended. The community is present with each other in a way I think is rare, unique. Coming from the University of Chicago, I was prepared for ministry in theory—but in practice, working at First Church engendered in me the conviction that ministry is about the community, the communion, the church. For example, I lead a weekly young adult discussion and discernment group for nine months. No amount of theory could have prepared me for the relationships I formed in that setting, which forced me to shed any veneer of theoretical and knowledgeable security. This sense of security actually inhibited me from being the vulnerable and honest leader that these young adults needed. Since working at First, the face-to-face relationship has become my staring point, the fundamental core of my ministry. I do not think I would have this attitude without working at First—I would still be working from the larger system inward, as it were. But at First, it is literally impossible to do this.
